The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) and Agile Alliance announce the publication of the 2013 Agile Extension to the BABOK Guide, now available for the first time in print and for bulk orders or licensing at lower cost per person.

The Agile Extension to the BABOK® Guide helps business analysts deliver business knowledge to agile software developers quickly and effectively. The BABOK® Guide 2.0 itself offers a common framework to understand and define the practice of business analysis. An earlier draft of the Agile Extension was released only in PDF format  in 2011 to allow for a reasonable period of hands-on use and subsequent feedback from practitioners worldwide.

The 2013 Agile Extension can be purchased as a PDF for  US$14.99 from www.IIBA.org. and  www.AgileAlliance.org.  Print copies are available for US$29.99 at leading North American and European online book retailers. Discounted bulk orders can be purchased online as well. Organizations can also buy a software license agreement by contacting AgileOrders@IIBA.org.

Kevin Brennan, CBAP, PMP, Chief Business Analyst and EVP, IIBA®, says, “Relevant insights and feedback from practitioners received during the consultation process have been captured in this new 2013 release of the Agile Extension.” He adds, “Intense collaborating on this project has already built deeper appreciation for various skill sets brought to projects by software developers and business analysts working on agile teams.”

“The Agile Extension contains smart ideas that are useful to all business analysts, even if they don’t work in an agile environment,” says Mr. Brennan.

Shane Hastie, Director of Agile Alliance, says, “The intent of the Agile Extension is to provide a set of practices and tools practitioners can select while working in any one of the different flavors of agile.” He adds, “The goal of both our organizations is to support practitioners, build bridges between our communities, and advance the state of practice.”

This 2013 release of the Agile Extension offers information on business analysis in agile lifecycles; the mapping of information back to the BABOK® Guide 2.0; descriptions of over 20 new business analysis techniques useful in an agile environment; and key principles regarding agile business analysis. The tool also includes definitions of typical working practices used by business analysts on agile projects and an overview of the new and changed roles, skills, and competencies for business analysts.

The Agile Extension has been developed by a global team of volunteers with in-depth experience in both business analysis and agile software development. The tool helps the business analysis community effectively contribute to agile development efforts. At the same time, the extension helps agile software developers make use of business analysis knowledge to deliver better, more valuable products
